Learn More about Stanway House

On entering the village from Winchcombe, one of the first things you see is the gatehouse. Built of local Guiting Yellow stone, a rich amber honeycomb stone, it is topped by a line of scallops, which, as well as being linked to the pilgrimage to Santiago, were part of the Tracy family coat of arms. It is certainly one of the most striking and attractive structures in the Cotswolds. It occupies an unusual position, perpendicular to the house rather than to the front, probably because the proximity of the church prevented it from finding another location. It is likely that this is because the proximity of the church did not allow him to find another location. It is almost in line with an avenue of trees in the pastures on the other side of the gardens, which may also have served as an entrance. Stanway House has been called the ultimate Cotswold manor house, but it is its garden that will appeal to most people in this peaceful Cotswold village. The restored baroque water garden has some unusual features that make a visit to Stanway worthwhile. Perhaps the most notable of these is the pyramidal folly, built in 1750 by Robert Tracy in memory of his father, John. Bonus: a large canal gives way to a fountain that shoots water up to 300 feet high.
